Growing Opposition to De Zerbi’s Appointment as Tottenham Head Coach
Concerns are mounting among Tottenham Hotspur supporters regarding the club’s decision to appoint Roberto De Zerbi as head coach. This discontent stems primarily from his controversial remarks regarding Mason Greenwood, a player recently embroiled in serious allegations.
Key Highlights
- Fan groups express strong opposition to De Zerbi’s appointment.
- De Zerbi’s support for Greenwood raises significant concerns.
- Tottenham Supporters‘ Trust has officially contacted the club.
- Prior controversies with managerial appointments highlight ongoing tensions.
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters‘ Trust convened an emergency board meeting on Monday night and subsequently reached out to the club, stating it cannot back the appointment of De Zerbi, who recently replaced Igor Tudor with a five-year contract.
In a statement, the Supporters‘ Trust revealed that a wave of emails from fans expressing dissatisfaction had prompted their actions. Co-founder of the Women of the Lane group, Ali Speechly, emphasized her group’s opposition and announced her intent to stop attending matches if De Zerbi is appointed.
De Zerbi’s comments regarding Greenwood, who transferred from Manchester United to Marseille, have sparked outrage. He remarked that Greenwood “paid in a strong way” after charges against him were dropped. Such statements have raised eyebrows, as they seem to downplay the gravity of the allegations against the player, which included attempted rape and assault.
Greenwood was once hailed as a promising talent, but his career took a drastic turn following his arrest in January 2022. After all charges were dropped in February 2023, he made a move to Marseille, where he has since thrived, scoring 47 goals in 74 appearances.
However, the signing was not without controversy. Marseille’s mayor, Benoit Payan, labeled the move “unacceptable,” expressing concerns about the club’s reputation. Despite the backlash, Greenwood has continued to shine on the pitch, finishing as Ligue 1’s joint top scorer with 21 goals last season.
De Zerbi’s remarks, made prior to a Champions League match against Newcastle, further inflamed the situation. When questioned about Greenwood’s off-field issues, he stated, “I don’t want to get involved in anyone’s private life… Mason seems a good lad, he paid in a strong way for what happened.” His comments suggested a degree of sympathy towards Greenwood, which many Spurs fans view as inappropriate.
This isn’t the first time Tottenham has faced backlash over a managerial hire. In June 2021, the club faced significant opposition over potential appointment of Gennaro Gattuso due to his controversial past comments on various social issues. The #NoToGattuso hashtag trended on social media, leading the club to withdraw consideration for his candidacy.
Trust secretary Tristan Foot indicated that the organization would continue to relay supporter concerns to the club, emphasizing that these discussions are crucial to maintaining the club’s values.
Speechly, along with other fan groups, expressed that De Zerbi’s comments directly contradict the club’s efforts to foster inclusivity and respect among all fans. She stated, “The fact is that he hired him [Greenwood] as a player… that’s just unforgivable. It speaks to the character of De Zerbi and poses a risk to the safety and wellbeing of women within the club’s environment.”
The Trust issued a statement deeming De Zerbi’s comments “unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive to a significant number of supporters.” They called upon the club to reaffirm its commitment to equality, respect, and integrity, urging for leadership that aligns with these values.
Tottenham Hotspur has been approached for comment regarding the ongoing situation and the backlash surrounding De Zerbi’s appointment.
