Tommy Conway: Scotland Striker’s World Cup Hopes Revived

Scotland striker Tommy Conway thought his dreams of representing his country at the World Cup were dashed. However, recent selections for upcoming friendlies against Japan and the Ivory Coast have reignited his aspirations.

Key Highlights

  • Conway has six international caps but missed last year’s qualification campaign.
  • He is determined to secure his place in the squad for the World Cup this summer.
  • The 23-year-old has been pivotal for Middlesbrough, scoring eight goals in 39 appearances this season.
  • Conway aims to bring a winning mentality from club to country.

The 23-year-old Middlesbrough forward, who has yet to make an appearance in the successful qualification campaign last year, is now looking forward to potentially adding to his six caps against Japan at Hampden Park this Saturday, or on Tuesday when Scotland faces the Ivory Coast at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium. “To be honest, I realized that being part of this camp was crucial if I wanted a shot at the World Cup,” he admitted.

Conway has set personal targets since November, using the thought of playing for Scotland as motivation. “Almost like checking off a box, my first goal was to be included in this camp. Now, the next step is to make it to the World Cup, and I’m working hard to ensure that happens,” he stated.

Missing out on previous camps sparked doubt in his mind. “After a while, you start to wonder, ‘Am I still in the picture for Scotland? What more do I need to do to be considered?” He reflected on his past experiences, thinking, “I’ve been here before, so why can’t I be there again?”

Conway’s last appearance for the national team was a friendly win over Liechtenstein in June. He described missing the memorable night against Denmark at Hampden as a catalyst that fueled his determination to reclaim his spot in the squad.

Currently, Conway is making waves at Middlesbrough, helping the team pursue promotion to the Premier League. His eight goals in 39 matches have propelled Boro to second place in the Championship with seven games remaining. He noted that thriving under pressure at the club level has honed his skills, which he believes will benefit Scotland on the international stage.

“Playing in high-pressure situations every week only enhances your game. The experience you gain can translate directly to playing for Scotland. If I make it to the World Cup, it’s going to be a pressure cooker,” he concluded, brimming with ambition and a sense of purpose.

As Scotland prepares for their World Cup journey, fans eagerly anticipate how Conway will contribute to the team’s success, hoping to see his name on the roster in the summer.
