Raphinha Slams Refereeing After Barcelona’s UCL Exit

Raphinha expressed his outrage following Barcelona’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Atlético Madrid. The Brazilian forward, who was sidelined due to injury, made the trip to Madrid to witness his team crash out of the tournament with a 3-2 aggregate loss despite a 2-1 victory on the night at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Key Highlights

  • Barcelona won the match 2-1 but lost 3-2 on aggregate.
  • Raphinha criticized the referee‘s decisions during the match.
  • Eric García was sent off late in the game, compounding Barcelona’s woes.
  • Barcelona is still leading LaLiga, nine points clear at the top.

Barcelona’s early goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres briefly reignited hope among the fans, leveling the tie on aggregate. However, a strike from Ademola Lookman sealed Atlético’s place in the semifinals, where they will face either Arsenal or Sporting Club. Raphinha, frustrated by the officiating, stated, “The game was completely robbed. The referee had a lot of problems. Some of the decisions he took were incredible. I don’t know how many fouls Atlético made and he didn’t book them.”

The discontent didn’t end there. Barcelona appealed for a penalty when Dani Olmo was fouled, but Raphinha refrained from pinpointing any single decision. This is the second consecutive game where the club has been left seething over the officiating. They previously filed a complaint with UEFA regarding the lack of penalty calls, which was deemed inadmissible.

Raphinha continued, “It’s human to commit one error, but for it to happen again in another game? We played really well, but this tie was robbed from us. It’s tough, especially knowing we have to put in three times the effort to win the match. I really want to understand why [the referee] is so scared of Barça getting through the tie.”

Despite dominating the stats—more shots on target (15 to 8) and a higher expected goals (xG) tally of 3.38 compared to Atlético’s 2.08—Barcelona failed to progress. Coach Hansi Flick voiced his disappointment, emphasizing that the team deserved to be in the semifinals. “We played a fantastic first half tonight. We had to score more goals. When you see both matches, we deserve to be in the semifinal. We have to accept it. The mentality, the attitude the players show on the pitch, I am proud about that,” he said.

Barcelona’s season is not entirely over, as they still lead LaLiga by nine points with seven fixtures remaining. Flick added, “The next step is to win LaLiga. We are on the way. It’s not done yet. We have more games and we have to do like this today. Of course we are disappointed right now. It’s normal. It’s a big dream to win the Champions League. We have to learn about the things we have to improve, but we have a young team and they can and will improve next season. I know it’s disappointing for everyone; I am also disappointed. It’s football, it’s life. We have to come back.”
