Anthony Elanga Embraces New Challenges at Newcastle United
Anthony Elanga, the forward for Newcastle United, is on a journey of transformation, both personally and professionally. Recently, he opened up about the considerable time he spends in his “man cave,” which, contrary to expectations, isn’t filled with gaming consoles or recreational activities but serves as his dedicated recovery room.
Key Highlights
- Elanga has invested in a personal gym and recovery equipment.
- He recently became a father, adding perspective to his life and career.
- Despite ups and downs, he vows to improve and contribute more to the team.
- Elanga aims to replicate his previous success while adapting to Newcastle’s competitive environment.
“My partner might not be thrilled about it, but she understands and values my commitment,” Elanga shared. “It’s all about that extra 1% that could make a difference in my game. I’ve always believed that hard work pays off.” After his £55m transition from Nottingham Forest last summer, Elanga set up a home in the North East, complete with a gym, hyperbaric chamber, sauna, and even a 3G football pitch to aid his recovery.
While he hasn’t yet reached his peak performance at Newcastle, Elanga’s determination is unwavering. He recently delivered a standout performance in a 2-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur, where he expressed confidence in his potential. “There’s still so much more to come,” he stated, echoing his ambitions.
Elanga’s journey is marked by significant life changes, including the recent birth of his first child. “Bringing Blair into the world has been the proudest moment of my life,” he expressed. The joy of fatherhood has given him a new perspective on his career and aspirations. “She’s going to grow up as a little Geordie, and I can’t wait for her to experience life here in Newcastle. I wouldn’t trade this feeling for anything.”
Adapting to the high-pressure environment under manager Eddie Howe has been a challenge for Elanga. He acknowledged that the intensity and structure of training sessions took time to adjust to, especially during a packed fixture schedule. Following some criticism from fans, Howe emphasized the importance of creating a comfortable atmosphere for Elanga to thrive. The fans responded positively, chanting his name during matches, particularly after he scored his first goal for the club against Manchester City earlier this month.
Elanga’s connection with the supporters has been heartwarming, as shown when he deliberately took his time leaving the pitch after realizing his number was up. “I made sure to walk even slower,” he said with a smile. “If I could have stayed out there longer, I would have.”
Howe faced scrutiny after a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Brentford, but the team rallied to show their commitment to their coach. Elanga noted, “We always want to fight for the gaffer because we know how much he’s done for us. He’s improved me tremendously, and I’m grateful for that. Every time I step onto the pitch, I bring heart and desire, and I hope the fans see that.”
Despite being tenth in the Premier League, Newcastle has had a series of ups and downs this season. Elanga admitted, “I’m not where I want to be just yet,” but he remains optimistic about his development. The French saying, “précis pas pressé”—meaning precise, not rushed—resonates with him. He believes he is in the right place to grow as a player.
Looking forward to the FA Cup clash against Aston Villa, Elanga is motivated by the prospect of returning to Wembley, especially after witnessing Newcastle’s triumph in the EFL Cup last season. “I could see they were building something special here. The unity within this group is incredible, and I wanted to be a part of it. Seeing what they achieved last season motivated me to join Newcastle,” he concluded.
